Disc 1

July 2005: This mix was created for Saturday mornings spent reading books, relaxing with the newspaper, or enjoying breakfast. Most of the tracks are older releases that have been floating in and out of my CD player this past year or so.

  1. Dynamite Walls – Hayden
    Skyscraper National Park
From the album “Skyscraper National Park“, the lyrics remind me of driving between Seattle and Whistler and the feeling of leaving the city behind and heading north to enjoy being outdoors.
  2. Moonlight Mile - The Rolling Stones
    Sticky Fingers
From “Sticky Fingers” where it closes out the album. The song came to my attention after listening to the soundtrack for Brad Silberling’s film Moonlight Mile. Proof that there is great music in the Stones back catalogue beyond “40 Licks”.
  3. Dogs And Thunder – Weeping Tile
    Eepee
From the album “Eepee” CD which also featured the original version of Sarah Harmer’s hit Basement Apartment. Sarah has played this on recent tours and I was happy to find it again. Great storytelling and simple delivery. It wouldn’t surprise me if the track gets re-recorded for a future album.
  4. Buckets Of Rain – Bob Dylan
    Blood On The Tracks [Remaster]
From the album “Blood On The Tracks” and highlighted on both the 2000 Wonder Boys and 2002 Moonlight Mile sountracks. There is something about the lines ‘Life is sad. Life is a bust. All ya can do is do what you must. You do what you must do and ya do it well, I’ll do it for you, honey baby, can’t you tell?’ that stick in my memory.
  5. Love This Town – Joel Plaskett
    La De Da [2/22]
The first of two songs from the album “La De Da “. A song that grabbed me the first time I heard it. Plaskett is one of the best songwriters in Canada at the moment. He can crank out the rockers or strip it down on tracks like this one.
  6. One Great City – The Weakerthans

A love-hate song about the city of Winnipeg from the band’s 2003 release “Reconstruction Site” . I first heard this at one of the best websites – CBCRadio3.com – as they had a live-in-studio version featured in a story on the band.

  7. Chelsea Hotel #2 – Josh Ritter
Cover of a Leonard Cohen track that holds up well against the original. Ritter’s third album “Hello Starling” got a lot of spins with the folks at Hear Music – especially Kathleen, Man Burning, Bright Smile and You Don’t Make It Easy Babe.
  8. Bloody Mother F**king A**hole – Martha Wainwright
    Martha Wainwright [4/12]
From the very musical Wainwright family comes this bold and stark tune. The track is from her self-titled 2005 release.
  9. Nina And Albert – Joel Plaskett
    La De Da [2/22]
From the album “La De Da“, the track follows two sides to a conversation. The album was largely written as an on-the-road record as Joel travelled from Halifax to Phoenix. The album is worth checking out as are its predecessors “Down At The Khyber” and “Truthfully Truthfully“.
  10. Healing Hands Of Time – Willie Nelson
From the “KCRW: Sounds Eclectic” series, a live on the floor, one take, no overdubs version delivered by Willie.
  11. Throw Your Arms Around Me – Neil Finn
Another track from the “KCRW: Sounds Eclectic” disc, Neil Finn covers the Hunters & Collectors tune. Crowded House use to play this song on tour.
  12. Transatlanticism – Death Cab For Cutie
    Transatlanticism [SACD Hybrid] *
Title track from the album “Transatlanticism“, this track was reworked for a Bell Canada Olympic commercial in 2004. From the frontlines of the indie rock scene in the Pacific Northwest, Death Cab For Cutie has become a favourite for the O.C. crowd.
  13. Take Me Out – Scissor Sisters
The Franz Ferdinand hit reworked into a campy Elton John-esque lounge number by the NYC quintet.
  14. Going, Going, Gone – Stars
  15. The District Sleeps Alone – The Postal Service
    Give Up
  16. Wonderwall – Ryan Adams
The version that apparently blew Noel Gallagher away when he heard it. I don’t think that I would go that far. It is interesting and worthy of at least a repeat listen.
  17. Salt Of The Earth – The Rolling Stones
Another Stones track and one that I wish I’d come across while DJ’ing at Clark Hall Pub and Alfie’s Pub. Originally released as the last track on the blues filled “Beggars Banquet” LP.
  18. Holiday Road – matt pond PA
A cover of the Lindsey Buckingham track from the 1983 Vacation movie soundtrack. This version is taken from a disc called “Winter Songs”. The band’s “Emblems” CD got stuck in my car CD player for a while and I enjoyed it immensely.
